The Investigations Division is responsible for conducting criminal investigations and augmenting law enforcement operations for the Sheriff's Office. The Investigation's Division also assists other law enforcement agencies and the County Attorney's Office with criminal investigations and other law enforcement activities.
Our general assignment Detective Sergeants specialize in child victim crimes; physical, emotional, and sexual abuse cases; and serious crimes against persons. They are available to assist the patrol deputies with more complex investigations and help with major cases and crime scene processing.
The Lyon County Sheriff's Office has a crime lab with specialized lighting, photography, crime scene processing equipment and air filtration equipment which allows us to do some specialized fingerprint and preliminary identification of bodily fluids and microscopic physical comparisons.
In the event that a serious crime occurs in which the Sheriff's Office needs help in processing or investigation, we will work with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation to process the scene, conduct interviews, and investigate the case completely.

The Lyon County Sheriff's Office is staffed with a variety of professionals dedicated to providing the best possible services to victims of child abuse and sexual assault, and bringing the perpetrators of these crimes to justice.
The Lyon County Sheriff's Office is a part of a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) that collaborates on cases related to sexual assault investigations and prosecutions. The MDT consists of professionals from the community who work together to improve the response to victims of sexual assault. The core team is comprised of law enforcement, Department of Children and Families Investigators, SOS family advocates, prosecutors, and Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE).
The Detective Sergeants are qualified to complete forensic interviews of juveniles who are suspected to be victims of sexual, physical or emotional abuse.
Working within the Emporia-Lyon County MDT, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office helps the community provide a more professional, effective response to sexual assault and child victim crimes by holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes and ensuring better service to victims.
The Probation Enforcement Deputy is assigned full-time to the Fifth Judicial District, Department of Community Corrections. The Probation Enforcement Deputy is partnered with an Intensive Supervision Officer to conduct field-based supervision of high-risk, felony offenders in the community. Field-based supervision permits the officers to respond swiftly to violations by intervening before small problems grow into larger ones. This partnership between the Lyon County Sheriff's Office and Fifth Judicial District Department of Community Corrections provides local law enforcement with a valuable intelligence resource about a targeted population of offenders and helps to promote public safety.
The Sheriff's Office currently has two deputies certified as arson investigators. In the event that a fire occurs within our community and it is deemed suspicious in nature the Sheriff's Office works with the Emporia Fire Department and their investigators to attempt to determine the cause of the fire.
The Sheriff's Office also has 2 deputies certified in accident reconstruction. These deputies are able to respond to serious accident scenes and investigate them to determine what occurred. Their skills range from being able to determine if a vehicle's headlights were on at the time of the collision to determining the speed of a vehicle right before the collision.
